An episode of Sparrows

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An Episode of Sparrows (German Die Blaue Blumen der Catstreet ) is the title of a novel by Rumer Godden from 1956.

The novel is set in Catford Street, a densely built-up area in London with little greenery. Lovejoy Mason , a girl living with a foster family, finds a bag of cornflower seeds one day. She uses it to create a small garden on a shabby property, initially mocked by other children, but eventually finds support from Tip Malone , the leader of a street gang. The two children develop a tender friendship with each other that grows just as gently as the green in the garden. Gradually the garden begins to be interesting and even fascinating for other people in the area and changes the perspectives in a world that is both real and figurative.

In 1958 the novel was filmed under the title Innocent Sinners with June Archer in the role of Lovejoy Mason and Christopher Hey in the role of Tip Malone.
