Rumer Godden

Margaret Rumer Godden OBE (born December 10, 1907 in Eastbourne , East Sussex , † November 8, 1998 in Dumfriesshire , Scotland ) was an English writer .

After Godden had lived mostly in India in the first forty years of her life and had directed a ballet school there for more than 20 years, she finally settled in the United Kingdom in 1949 . She wrote more than 60 books, mostly novels, some of which achieved high editions and were also made into films. Her most successful works include The Black Narzissus , In This House of Brede , The River , The Doll's House , An Episode of Sparrows , Greengage Summer and The Diddakoi .

In 1993 Godden was named Officer of the Order of the British Empire . She died in 1998 at the age of 90.
