Anastasius von Segraedt (* around 1541 in Aachen ; † beginning of the 17th century) was a German lay judge and mayor of the imperial city of Aachen .

Life

The great-grandson of Gottschalk von Segraedt , the last mayor of the family, followed his father, also called Gottschalk, into the college of aldermen and was first mentioned as such in 1564 and later appointed aldermen. After he had already belonged to the council of the city of Aachen in 1580 and 1581, von Segraedt was elected mayor of the Free Imperial City in 1587, 1589, 1591, 1593, 1594, 1595 and 1597 .

Segraedt's terms of office fell at the height of the Aachen religious unrest . Although Catholic by nature, he was open to the efforts of the Protestant citizens to get more religious freedoms and a say and to be able to elect council members and mayors of their denomination to the city council. With Peter von Zevel and Dietrich Vercken, Segraedt always had elected mayors from the evangelical camp by his side, as did his equally liberal Catholic mayor colleague Bonifacius Colyn , who cooperated with the evangelical Simon Engelbrecht . Anastasius von Segraedt was able to alternate with this mayor couple from year to year in his terms of office, so that there was a certain constancy in the government of the city of Aachen over a longer period of time, which temporarily strengthened the interests of the evangelical citizens and those of Emperor Rudolf in 1593 II. imposed imperial ban was initially prevented the Reformed. In 1597, the religious unrest bore strange blossoms, when Segraedt, Vercken and Matthäus Peltzer were elected by the Protestant majority of the city council and two Catholic officials, Egidius Valenzyn and Wilhelm von Wylre . A year later the imperial ban was finally enforced by imperial troops, which led to the impeachment and expulsion of Anastasius von Segraedt and the Protestant officials as well as sympathizers and numerous citizens.

Although von Segraedt was at the top of the list of outlaws that was posted in the Church of St. Foillan , he is missing from the list of people who had to pay a fine in 1602 because of their commitment to the evangelical citizens. He was also supposed to testify as a witness in a legal dispute in 1606, but no record of the interrogation exists in the trial files. This suggests that at this point in time he had either moved from Aachen unknown or had died in the meantime.
