Anatoly Liberman

Anatoly Liberman ( Russian Анатолий Симонович Либерман Anatoli Simonowitsch Liberman ; born March 10, 1937 in Leningrad ) is a Russian-American English, German and Scandinavian linguist and mediaevalist .

After graduating from high school in 1954, Liberman studied German and English at the Hertzen Pedagogical Institute in Leningrad from 1954 to 1959, with the state examination for German, English and pedagogy. From 1962 to 1965 he studied English and Germanic Philology at the University of Leningrad , where in 1962 he received his master's degree in English and Germanic languages. From 1965 to 1975 he was a research assistant at the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Leningrad, where he received his doctorate in 1965, and in 1972 he received his habilitation. In 1975 he emigrated to the USA and became Professor of German Philology at the University of Minnesota .
