The Anba Pola Monastery

The Anba Pola Monastery is a Coptic monastery in Egypt named after Paul of Thebes , who is considered the first Christian ascetic in Egypt. The fortress-like building was traditionally built in the 4th century and is located in the eastern desert near the Red Sea , more precisely at the foot of the southern Al-Galala mountain near El-Safrana . Paul is said to have lived in the monastery for 70 years.

Within the fortress there are several churches, the so-called "Old Church", the Abo Sefeen Church and the El Mamlak Church. The latter was built in 1777 with twelve domes. The library of the monastery has 764 manuscripts.
