Anderssen opening
The Anderssen opening is a closed opening in chess and begins with the move 1. a2 – a3 . It is no longer popular nowadays because the first white move does not promote development and also neglects the fight for the center . Today it is counted among the irregular openings .
The main answer moves for Black are:
- 1.… e7 – e5 !? (Note that after 2. c2 – c4 swapped Sicilian positions can arise, but with more tempo for White. That is then Sicilian on the approach .),
- 1.… g7 – g6 (2. Ng1 – f3, g2 – g3, h2 – h4 or e2 – e4),
- 1.… d7 – d5 (2. Ng1 – f3).
Often positions arise that are known from the English game or resemble it in their strategic plans.
In his 1857 competition in Paris against Paul Morphy, Adolf Anderssen played this opening several times in order to bring the aggressive American into closed games . In the tournament in Vienna in 1873, Wilhelm Steinitz used this opening against Joseph Henry Blackburne in the second playoff game and won convincingly.
