André Poisson

André Poisson (born February 28, 1923 in Angers , France as Étienne Poisson ; † April 20, 2005 in La Grande Chartreuse , France) was a French monk and prior of the Grande Chartreuse and Minister General of the Carthusian Order from 1967 to 1997 .

Poisson graduated from high school and studied at the École Polytechnique in Paris . In 1946 he joined the Grande Chartreuse. When he was dressed, he took the religious name André. He made his profession on February 2, 1948. In 1954 he was ordained a priest.

On May 8, 1967, he was elected prior of the Grande Chartreuse. At the same time he became Minister General of the Order. Since the election took place shortly after the Second Vatican Council , he had to adapt the statutes of the order. During his tenure, the first Carthusian monks outside Europe were founded. In 1997 he resigned as Minister General and Prior of the Grande Chartreuse. After that he was prior of the Charterhouse Transfiguration in Vermont, USA for two years . Subsequently, until 2001 he was the ritual of the Carthusians of Vedana , a former male carthusian monastery . Then he moved back to the Grande Chartreuse.
