Andreas Gruber (hymn poet)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Andreas Gruber (* probably end of the 15th century; † first half of the 16th century) was a German hymn poet . He composed the thirteen-verse song Oh God of the Kingdom of Heaven, through Christ your Son, grant me . The first letters of the stanzas give his name, and in the last stanza he states that he wrote the song in prison. Nothing is known about Gruber's life itself. His song was first published in Bergkreyen , a collection probably printed in Nuremberg in 1526/1527 , and then in 1531 in Joachim Slueter's Rostock hymn book in Low German . It was then included in other hymn books, and it was quite common in the 16th century.
