Andrew of Samosata

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Andrew of Samosata († after 444) was bishop of the Syrian city of Samosata .

Life

Andrew of Samosata appeared in the disputes over the Patriarch of Constantinople Nestorius as his partisan. He was a decisive opponent of the Patriarch Cyril of Alexandria . At the Council of Ephesus 431, at which Cyril succeeded in condemning Nestorius' theological doctrines about the divine and human nature in Christ, Andrew did not take part. However, after initial hesitation, he later agreed to the formula compromise of 433, but did not agree to condemn Nestorius.

John of Antioch and Theodoret of Kyrrhos asked Andrew to write a refutation of the twelve anathematisms of Cyril of Alexandria. These are only passed down to us in Cyril's answer to Andrew's writing.

A few surviving letters from Andrew reflect the theological debates in Syria after the said Council of Ephesus. Rabbula von Edessa took a position against Nestorianism in a letter to Andreas.
