Andrew James Ginther (born April 27, 1975 in Columbus , Ohio ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He has been the 53rd Mayor of Columbus since January 1, 2016.

Life

Andrew Ginther was born the third of four children and grew up in the Clintonville neighborhood , where he attended Dominion Middle School and Whetstone High School . After graduating from high school, Ginther studied at Earlham College in Indiana, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1997 . During his studies, Ginther completed a year abroad at the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland. After graduating, Ginther worked as an advisor to Senator Dan Brady.

In 1999, Ginther ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the Columbus Education Committee. Another candidacy two years later was finally successful and in 2005 Ginther was re-elected. In February 2007 Andrew Ginther moved into the Columbus City Council, taking over from Matt Habash, who had stepped down from the City Council. In November 2007, Ginther was elected for a full term. On January 3, 2011, Andrew Ginther was elected chairman of the city council, at 35 he was the youngest ever to hold the office. In March 2015, Ginther and the also Democratic politician Zach Scott were selected in a primary to replace the then mayor of Columbus, Michael Coleman , in the office. In the November 2015 election, Ginther prevailed against Scott with 59 percent of the vote.

Andrew Ginther took office on January 1, 2016. At the same time, his tenure as city council president ended. In 2019, Ginther was re-elected as mayor of Columbus unopposed.
