Andrzej Januszajtis

Andrzej Januszajtis (born August 18, 1928 in Lida (then Poland, now Belarus)) is a Polish physicist, former director of the Physics Institute of the Technical University of Gdańsk and dean of the Faculty of Technical Physics and Mathematics as well as an expert on Gdańsk history.

After graduating from high school in Lublin , he came to Gdansk in 1948 to study at the Mechanical Faculty of the Technical University. At the same time he learned the piano in music school.

In 1954 he was appointed assistant to the chair for physics, and in 1968 he was appointed lecturer.

He was interested in the history of Danzig. He has written many books on the city, including tourist guides. He promoted the reconstruction of many Gdansk monuments, u. a. the astronomical clock as well as the renewal of the sundial at the Marienkirche in Gdańsk and the carillon glockenspiel at the Katharinenkirche, financed by Hans-Lothar Fauth .

After the fall of 1989 he became politically active. With the support of Solidarność , he was elected to the City Council of Gdansk and was its chairman from 1990-1994. On January 24, 2002 he received the title of Honorary Citizen of Gdansk .
