Angarium
The Angarium ( ancient Greek Ἀγγαρήιον ) was the institute of the royal messenger riders in ancient Persia (Herodotus VIII 98.) The messengers changed to stations that were a day's ride away. They were exclusively in the service of the great king.
Later the Angarium also referred to the legally enforced, free transport services for the Roman state .
