The Angelina National Forest is a national forest located in eastern Texas . With an area of 619.9 km², it is the smallest of the four federal forests in Texas. Like all national forests, it is federally owned and is used intensively for forestry purposes.
Within the economic forest there are various leisure and recreational offers. There are many hiking and camping opportunities. A wide variety of water sports can be practiced on the Sam Rayburn Reservoir , which is adjacent to the area.
Flora and fauna
The area is characterized by mild summers and winters. The main tree species in the forest are different types of pine . While spruce and frankincense pine dominate the northern part , swamp pines are mainly found in the southern forest area .
There are over a hundred animal species in the forest. Among other things, they offer the endangered cockade woodpecker a home. The largest native mammal species there is the white-tailed deer .

The Angelina National Forest includes two total reserves , which are dedicated as wilderness areas:
history
Archaeological finds document the first human settlement in the area around 6,000 years before Christ. The excavations were carried out by the US Forest Service before the Sam Rayburn Dam was built.
In 1936, the administration of the federal forests in Texas was reorganized by National Forests. Along with the Angelina National Forest, the three other Texas National Forests, the Davy Crockett National Forests , the Sam Houston National Forests and the Sabine National Forests were established.
