Angolar (currency)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Angolar (plural: Angolares ) was the currency of the Portuguese colony Angola from 1928 to 1958. It was divided into 100 centavos (corresponding to the Portuguese currency unit, centavo ) or 20 macutas .

history

The Angolar was introduced in 1928, replacing the Angolan Escudo . Banknotes were exchanged at the rate of 1 Angolar = 1.25 Portuguese Escudos .

Coins

The coins already issued as Centavos and Macutas before 1928 were unaffected by the introduction of the Angolar. In 1958 the name of the Angolan currency was renamed back to "Angolan Escudo" after coins were also circulated as escudos from 1952 onwards. In addition to the coins that were already in circulation (1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 centavos), new 10, 20 and 50 centavos were issued in 1948 and 1950.

Banknotes

In 1928 the Junta de Moeda introduced banknotes (dated 1926) in pieces of 1, 2½, 5 and 10 Angolares, while the Bank of Angola circulated 20, 50, 100 and 500 Angolars, dated 1927. In 1942 the Governo Geral brought out the values 1 and 2½ Angolar as banknotes. In 1944, 1000 Angolar notes from the Bank of Angola were added, followed by 5 and 10 Angolares in 1947.
