Ignazio Canazei

Ignazio Canazei SDB (born May 8, 1883 in Brixen , † October 10, 1946 in Shiuchow ( Shaoguan ), China ) was an Italian religious priest , missionary and Roman Catholic bishop .

Life

After completing school, he completed the aspirantate at the College of Cavaglià for a year , then switched to the novitiate in Ivrea . On October 5, 1901, he took his religious vows. According to his philosophical and theological studies, he was on 18 September 1909 in Foglizzo for ordained priests . Initially he was director of the Penango Monferrato College for two years . After earning the laureate in theology, he went to Macau as a missionary in 1912 .

In 1924 he became provincial of the Chinese province of the Salesians of Don Bosco.

On 23/24 July 1930 Pope Pius XI appointed him . as Vicar Apostolic of Shiuchow in China, connected with the titular bishopric of Carystus . He succeeded the murdered Bishop Aloisius Versiglia . The episcopal ordination took place on November 9th of the same year by Celso Costantini . His motto was: Sinae Deo Ego Sinis

He translated the Gospel of Luke and Don Bosco's Giovane Provveduto into Chinese , compiled a church history and a dictionary with the folklore common and necessary for the apostolate . He could preach in Latin, Chinese, Portuguese, French, English, and German.

During the eight years of the war between China and Japan , people in the vicariate suffered great hardship. The bishop himself was initially trapped in his residence. At the time of the invasion on January 24, 1945, he was in Hosai with 1,600 refugees . On his return the cathedral, the episcopate and the college were destroyed.

On April 11, 1946, he was finally appointed the first bishop of Shiuchow. He died a few months later.
