The Sukhumi attacks took place in 1993 in the context of the Georgian-Abkhaz civil war . Two Tupolev civil aircraft belonging to Transair Georgia and Orbi Georgian Airways were shot down with rockets by Abkhaz rebels and another three were destroyed by fire on the ground. 136 people died in the attacks.

September 20th

A Tupolev Tu-134 A of Orbi Georgian Airways ( aircraft registration number 4L-65809 ) without passengers or crew was destroyed on the ground at Sukhumi-Babushara airport by fire with rockets or firearms.

21st September

A Tupolev Tu-134 of Transair Georgia (4L-65893) on a flight from Sochi was shot down while approaching Sukhumi airport. The machine was hit by a Strela 2 missile and fell into the sea. All 27 occupants were killed, 5 crew members and 22 passengers.

September 22

A Tupolev Tu-154 B of Orbi Georgian Airways (4L-85163) was hit by a Russian anti-aircraft missile fired by Abkhaz insurgents on the flight from Tbilisi as it approached Sukhumi Airport. In the emergency landing and the resulting fire, 108 of the 132 people on board were killed, 8 crew members and 100 passengers.

September 23rd

  • A parked Orbi Georgian Airways (4L-85359) Tupolev Tu-154B-2 was destroyed by mortar or artillery fire at Sukhumi-Babushara Airport.
  • A Transair Georgia Tupolev Tu-134 (4L-65501) was devastated at Sukhumi Airport. The aircraft was fired at with Abkhaz BM-21-degree rocket launchers while boarding a flight to Tbilisi . The machine caught fire and burned out. A person died.
