Fetching is a term used in shipping that describes the controlled retrieval of a line (unprofessional: the controlled pulling of a "rope", a chain, etc.). This can be a rope as well as an anchor chain or anchor line. Fetching the anchor chain or anchor line is also referred to as hoisting (" pulling on the anchor line "). The term hoisting is also used when lifting loads on cranes or hauling in wires and ropes with winches on ships.

If a line is to be drawn in as far as possible and thus tightened, it is also referred to as being drawn tight .

The opposite of picking up, i.e. letting go (letting go) of a line, is called lowering .
