Detail of the facade of the cinema

The Animatógrafo do Rossio is a cinema in the municipality of Santa Maria Maior in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon .

It was set up in 1907 by the brothers José and Ernesto Cardoso Correia at the end of Rua dos Sapateiros , near the central Rossio , after the Animatógrafo dos Armazéns do Chiado and the Music Hall . The cinema, which had 100 seats at the time, was opened on December 8, 1907 with the feature film A Aventureira .

The richly decorated facade is now considered to be one of the most representative examples of Art Nouveau in Portugal, which here experienced a very typical expression. The facade is decorated with a dark green wood carving with ornamental motifs that frame the entrance on the left, the exit on the right and the ticket office in the middle. In between there are tile panels by M. Queriol, which show two female figures.

The hall initially served as a cinema, later as a variety stage and children's theater. In 1984 the Associação Portuguesa de Realizadores proposed to set up their headquarters here. These plans were never implemented. Today there is a sex shop with a porn cinema in the cinema.

The animatógrafo is registered in the Inventário Municipal de Património .
