The Ankaratra massif is a volcanic mountain range that runs in the middle of the central highlands of Madagascar in a north-south direction. Its highest mountain, the Tsiafajavona , is 2,644 m high. In a first eruption phase emerged trachytic volcanic dome and massive columns eruptions formed extensive lava fields. During the last activities, some cinder cones formed in the southern part of the massif. Volcanic eruptions formed some craters, which were filled with lakes.
