Annentag 2014

The Annentag in Brakel is a fair in the city center of Brakel in North Rhine-Westphalia . It takes place annually on the weekend of the first Sunday in August (Friday to Monday). In 2005 the Annentag celebrated its 250th anniversary in Brakel. The name Annentag is protected by trademark law.

For centuries people have made a pilgrimage to the Annenkapelle in Brakel to unload their worries and needs with St. Anna . Many people meet on the nine Tuesdays before and on the Sunday of Annens with a festive procession for the service at the baroque Annenkapelle in front of the city gates. The Annenkirmes developed from this purely ecclesiastical festival. The festive procession in memory of St. Anne first took place on July 26th and was later moved to the first Sunday in August (the Sunday of Annesday).

The oldest news about this holiday comes from the year 1498. After 1755 the previous four markets were closed and, like the St. Michaelis parish fair, moved to Annentag. At that time, the traditional fair that we know today was created. However, exact dates are not known.

Annentag will be opened on Friday at 4:00 p.m. by three cannon shots and by the mayor and the church representative of the city of Brakel on a stage in the annen tent by tapping the first beer barrel. The end of Annentag marks a fireworks display on Monday evening .
