A bump cap is a hat , usually in the form of a baseball cap , into which a plastic insert has been incorporated to protect the head.

It is used in industry wherever helmets are not compulsory , but employees still protect against bumping their head, e.g. B. sharp-edged parts should be protected. It is also lighter than a helmet and is more comfortable to wear.

The bump cap, however, has a significantly lower energy absorption capacity than a protective helmet and can therefore not protect against objects hitting with high energy . Therefore it is z. B. Not an acceptable substitute for a helmet on construction sites .

The plastic insert can be removed for washing the hat.

Similar caps were already worn in the Middle Ages as "skull caps" made of sheet iron by poor people who could not finance a proper helmet. The protective effect was also limited here, but z. B. obliquely striking arrows or sword blows are deflected.
