Antenna pigment

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In phototrophic creatures, antenna pigment is the term used to describe dyes ( pigments ) in the membrane of their thylakoids , which are stimulated by light of different wavelengths and transfer this light energy to the so-called reaction centers of the photosystems ( chlorophyll molecules) without any radiation or heat losses . In this way, phototrophic creatures can use more light and a larger wavelength spectrum as an energy source than if they only used the light absorbed by the reaction centers.

The antenna pigments include the various chlorophylls (a, b, c, d, e) as well as various carotenoids and possibly phycobilins .
