Anthocomus equestris , syn. Anthocomus bipunctatus , is a beetle from the subfamily of thehairpin beetle (Malachiinae) within the family Melyridae .
features
The slender black beetles are about 3 mm long. The antenna base in the representatives of the genus Anthocomus is not between, but in front of the eyes. The head and pronotum are black. The red to yellow colored wing covers have a black Skutellarfleck and on the back half of a large black cross band. The attachments in the excitator face up. The end links of the antennae are dark, otherwise yellow-brown. The anterior and middle femora are dark at the base, otherwise the legs are yellow-brown in color. The rear legs are usually completely dark in color. There are different colors within the species.
distribution
Anthocomus equestris is native to the western Palearctic . The species is common and common in Central Europe. The species was introduced in North America. There it occurs in Ontario (Canada) and in the northeast of the United States.
Way of life
The beetles are seen between February and June. The eurytopic species is found preferentially on the edges of forests and hedges as well as in heathland. The beetles are often found in apartments. The beetles feed mainly on pollen, the larvae on small organisms. Fungal spores on fungal branches are mentioned as a further food source.
