History and political orientation

The left-wing party came into being in 1970 at the instigation of businessman and lawyer John Rowan Henry . The starting point of the movement was a current within the Progressive Labor Movement called the Antigua Progressive Movement . The supporters of this trend took the view that within the political system of Antigua and Barbuda there should be a stricter separation between the political parties and the trade unions . After the Antigua Progressive Movement split from the Progressive Labor Movement in 1969, the Antigua People's Party was founded as an independent party in 1970. its most prominent members included MP Reuben Harris , who was elected to the House of Representatives as a candidate for the Progressive Labor Movement in a by-election in 1968 . The party's members were mostly business people. In her orientation she was considered conservative . In the 1971 general election , she put up 14 candidates. However, the party achieved a very meager result with 3.52% of the vote and could not get a seat in the House of Representatives. In 1974 she joined the Antigua Labor Party .
