Antissa (Ἄντισσα) was an ancient city on the northwest coast of the Greek island of Lesbos .

The place has been inhabited since prehistoric times. According to Greek mythology , the severed, but still singing head of Orpheus drifted across the sea to Lesbos. The prophetic head was then kept in a cave near Antissa.

In the 7th century BC The musician and poet Terpandros was born in Antissa , who decisively further developed Greek music.

167 BC Chr. The city was by the Romans destroyed and their inhabitants by Methymna resettled. The modern town of Andissa is further inland.
