  • Antiochus IV , ruler of the Seleucid Empire , dedicates the temple in Jerusalem to Zeus or Jupiter and in December has a pagan altar erected on the large altar in the temple courtyard. This leads to the revolt of the Jews under the leadership of the Maccabees . When a Jewish priest named Mattatias from the noble family of the Hasmoneans is asked to make a sacrifice for Antiochus in his hometown Modi'in , he kills the Seleucid messenger and a Jew who wanted to make the sacrifice, and pulls himself in with his sons and some faithful the desert back.
