Saraqinishta (  also  Saraqinishtë in Albanian ) is a small village in the municipality of Gjirokastra in southern Albania . Saraqinishta is 726  m above sea level. A. and is located about eight kilometers east of Gjirokastra in the hill country below the Lunxhëria mountain , which culminates above the village in a 2156 meter high peak.

About two kilometers southwest of the village center is the ancient city ​​of Antigoneia , which was founded by the Epirotian king Pyrrhus (319–272 BC) and named after his wife Antigone . Stones and whole columns from Antigoneia were built into churches and houses in the village.

Church of the Assumption

There are several Orthodox churches in and around the village . In Saraqinishta there is a Saint Nicholas Church ( Albanian  Kisha e Shën Kollit ) from the 17th century. The St. Mary's Church in Spila, an area with caves inhabited by hermits high above the village, also dates from the 17th century . Both churches, frescoed on the inside, are national cultural monuments . Another old church in the village is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary .

Until 2015 the village belonged to the municipality of Antigone , which was then incorporated into Gjirokastra.
