Antonino 'Ninni' Cassarà (born May 7, 1948 in Palermo , † August 6, 1985 ibid) was an Italian commissioner of the mobile task force in Palermo. In this capacity he was a high-ranking mafia hunter who was murdered by members of the mafia .

Life

Ninni Cassarà was a close collaborator of Giovanni Falcone and his anti-mafia pool . Although Cassarà and his team were poorly equipped and had little political backing, they achieved a number of investigative successes. Through extensive research, Cassarà was able to present a list of arrest warrants for over 160 members of the Mafia in 1982, which was the largest and most detailed collection of internal processes and hierarchies in the Mafia to date. He was able to compose this list with the help of many Pentiti who were willing to cooperate with the police during the Mafia wars for fear of being murdered by the Cosa Nostra clan around Totò Riina . One of his main informants was Salvatore Contorno , among other things , because he knew more about the inner relationships of the international heroin trade (see: Pizza Connection ) and was able to provide information about it. Antonino Cassarà was murdered by members of the Mafia on August 6, 1985. A killer squad of nine armed mafiosi surprised him and his bodyguards in front of his house. He died in the arms of his wife while his daughter could watch from the balcony. Cassarà received several awards for his work against the Mafia, for example the Valor civile .
