Antonio Maria da Carpi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Antonio Maria da Carpi , traceable from 1495 to 1504, was an Italian painter of the Venetian school .

Rare Venetian painter from the succession of Cima da Conegliano whose pupil he was probably also. Nothing is known about its origin. All information about him are conjectures obtained from two signed and dated works that are now in Budapest and are in private American ownership. The older of these two, painted around 1495, is based both stylistically and compositionally on a work by Cima da Conegliano that has survived in at least two copies. The other painting, dated two years later, varies the basic type of Cima da Conegliano, but shows a considerable difference in style from his works.

Due to the inconsistency of these two images, art history has not been able to assign further works to Antonio Maria da Carpi. Thus, all further attributions must currently be viewed as extremely hypothetical.
