history
Migrations in the early 18th century brought Mande riders and their malams from the north and Akan peoples from the east. Together with the indigenous Ndenyi , they were amalgamated into one people with a common language and culture. In the mid-18th century, a small community of mercenaries left Chokossi to assist the Gonja and Mamprusi chiefs in what is now Ghana .
The community consisted of alien riders and scholars, Akan infantrymen armed with muskets, and some Muslim amulet makers. These groups provided the basis for a society that was divided into three classes: nobles, commoners and Muslims.
