Anura Kumara Dissanayake , also Dissanayaka ( Sinhalese අනුර කුමාර දිසානායක , Tamil அநுர குமார திசாநாயக்க ; born November 24, 1968 in Thambuthegama, Anuradhapura , Ceylon, today Sri Lanka ) is a Sri Lankan politician.

biography

Dissayanake was born in a small village in the northern district of Anuradhapura into a simple Sinhalese family. He attended local school and began studying at Peradeniya University , but later moved to the University of Kelaniya near Colombo. In 1987 he joined the communist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (“People's Liberation Front”), shortly before it began its uprising against the UNP government under President Jayewardene . From 1988 he began a career as a professional politician. In 1995 he was the national organizer of the Socialist Students Association (සමාජවාදී ශිෂ්‍ය සංගමය), a subsidiary of the JVP. In the same year he became a member of the Central Committee and in 1998 a member of the Politburo of the JVP. In the parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka in 2001 he was elected as a member of the JVP via the country list and from 2004 was Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation under Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa . On June 16, 2005, the JVP and with it Dissanayake left the government again. He also won a seat for the JVP in the 2010 and 2015 parliamentary elections .

Since 2008 Dissayanake was parliamentary group leader of the JVP in the parliament of Sri Lanka in the opposition.

On February 2, 2014 Dissayanake was elected to succeed Somawansa Amarasinghe as chairman of the JVP. After the party founder Rohana Wijeeweera and Amarasinghe, he was the third party leader in the history of the JVP. On August 18, 2019, he was proclaimed the JVP's official candidate for the 2019 presidential election at a mass rally on Galle Face Green near Colombo . In the election campaign he was supported by the Jathika Janabala Peramuna , an alliance of 28 small parties and civil organizations led by the JVP.
