Application system

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An application system (English application system ) is the sum of the IT infrastructure consisting of hardware , software , data , storage technology , communications and network , which is designed for a specific area of responsibility. An application program is sometimes referred to as an application system, but it only covers part of the consideration.

In business informatics , an application system refers to the automated subsystem of information systems . In a broader sense, the application system includes the associated hardware, system software, communication facilities and the application system itself.

Components of application systems

An application system consists of the following components

Application program
Basic software
Communication technology
Computer hardware
Other hardware

Application program

The program used for the application is a processing instruction. This means that an algorithm (sequence of commands or instructions) evaluates the entered data and interprets this data with the help of an output function (e.g. monitor , printer, etc.).

Basic software

The basic software, for example the operating system , is the prerequisite for using a computer and at the same time designates the programs written in a programming language.

Computer hardware

Hardware is the physical requirement for using an application system.

Other hardware

  • Communication technology
  • Storage
  • Output devices

The integration of application systems

The aim of introducing an application system in a company is always a continuous and error-free flow of information. Correct coordination of relevant concepts is therefore crucial for application integration, with the following three approaches:

  • Data integration : A data integration provides such a management of the existing data stocks by two or more application systems, so that only one storage takes place for each date. If the same date occurs more than once, copies are created that are kept in a consistent state. The technical realization is possible by either setting up and operating a comprehensive database or by comparing the data stocks periodically or depending on events via interfaces.
  • Function integration : A function integration is a combination of technical, interrelated functions in an application system. Function integration also aims to avoid data integration problems that may arise after integration. It should be noted, however, that a single function-integrated application system does not always provide the best business administration solutions for all integrated functions.
  • Process and transaction integration : The process and transaction integration is achieved through the seamless connection of functions and sub-processes based on application systems. All relevant functions and data are made available to the user for each processing step. Successful process and transaction integration also enables easier monitoring of the process flow, which, however, requires a comprehensive description of the process. Process and transaction integration can take place both internally in the company and externally between companies or between a company and its consumers.
