description

The earliest mention of a church in Anwoth comes from the 12th century. However, the current building was not built until 1626. The year of construction 1627 indicated on a lintel was probably added later. That year the Church received its first minister in Samuel Rutherford . Due to a new building, the church building became obsolete in 1826 and is now only preserved as a ruin.

The church building, oriented in east-west direction, stands in the middle of the surrounding cemetery on the northern edge of the hamlet. The elongated building occupies an area of 21.3 m × 5.6 m. Its quarry stone masonry is 1.1 m thick. Entrances lead into the interior on both gable sides. There is a grave from the 17th century. There is also a cross plate , which was probably created around the year 1100.

graveyard

In the surrounding cemetery there are numerous ornamented tombstones, mainly from the 18th century. The mausoleum for the covenanter John Bell of Whiteside, who died in 1685, should be emphasized . The monument with its Egyptian-Greek style, obviously inspired by the work of Walter Newall , dates from the early 19th century. Its masonry consists of large blocks of granite . A quarry stone wall surrounds the cemetery.
