Gatehouse of Fleet is a town in the south of the Dumfries and Galloway Council Area in Scotland . The place has 986 inhabitants.

history

The present village was not built until the middle of the 18th century, but there are buildings in the area that are significantly older. For example, there is a fortified residential tower from the 15th century nearby . The city's first structure is a former warehouse and today's hotel, which was built in 1765. Originally the "gait house" was just a post on the important route to Portpatrick and Ireland , but by 1850 it developed into a prosperous cotton processing location. In 1795 four cotton mills, a brass foundry, a brewery, a soap factory, a tannery and twice as many residents as today had settled there. The reason for this development can be found in the vicinity of Loch Whinyeon, as the water for the mills of the spinning mills was drawn from there.
