List of municipalities in the Alb-Donau district
The list of municipalities in the Alb-Donau district gives an overview of the 55 smallest administrative units in the district . Eight of the municipalities are cities . The large district town of Ehingen (Danube) is a medium-sized town , the other seven, Blaubeuren , Dietenheim , Erbach , Laichingen , Langenau , Munderkingen and Schelklingen are small towns . With 55 municipalities, the Alb-Donau district is the district with the largest number of municipalities in Baden-Württemberg.
In its current form, the district was formed in the course of the district reform carried out in 1973 by the merger of the districts of Ehingen and Ulm as well as some communities in the districts of Biberach and Münsingen . Some communities in the Ehingen district went to the Biberach district, and two communities in the Ulm district went to the Göppingen district .

The district can be further divided into the following agreed administrative communities (VVG) and municipal administration associations (GVB):
- VVG Allmendingen with the municipalities, Allmendingen and Altheim ;
 - VVG Blaubeuren with the city of Blaubeuren and the municipality of Berghülen ;
 - GVB Dietenheim with the city of Dietenheim and the communities of Balzheim and Illerrieden ;
 - VVG Dornstadt with the municipalities Dornstadt , Beimerstetten and Westerstetten ;
 - VVG Ehingen (Danube) with the city of Ehingen (Danube) and the communities of Griesingen , Oberdischingen and Öpfingen ;
 - GVB Kirchberg-Weihungstal with the communities Hüttisheim , Illerkirchberg , Schnürpflingen and Staig (based in Illerkirchberg);
 - GVB Laichinger Alb with the city of Laichingen and the communities Heroldstatt , Merklingen , Nellingen and Westerheim (seat in Heroldstatt);
 - GVB Langenau with the city of Langenau and the communities Altheim (Alb) , Asselfingen , Ballendorf , Bernstadt , Börslingen , Breitingen , Holzkirch , Neenstetten , Nerenstetten , Öllingen , Rammingen , Setzingen and Weidenstetten ;
 - GVB Lonsee-Amstetten with the communities Lonsee and Amstetten (seat in Lonsee);
 - GVB Munderkingen with the city of Munderkingen and the communities Emeringen , Emerkingen , Grundsheim , Hausen am Bussen , Lauterach , Obermarchtal , Oberstadion , Rechtenstein , Rottenacker , Untermarchtal , Unterstadion and Unterwachingen ;
 
The cities of Blaustein , Erbach and Schelklingen are not members of an administrative community or a municipal administration association.
The district has a total area of 1357.32 km² . The district town of Ehingen (Danube) has the largest area within the district with 178.4 km². This is followed by the cities of Blaubeuren with 79.15 km², Schelklingen with 75.24 km² and Langenau with 75.0 km². The cities of Laichingen and Erbach have an area larger than 60 km². Two communities are larger than 50 km², three are larger than 40 km², one is larger than 30 km² and six are larger than 20 km². 18 municipalities cover an area of over 10 km², including the cities of Dietenheim and Munderkingen ; the remaining 19 municipalities are less than 10 km². The smallest areas have the municipalities Hausen am Bussen with 3.52 km², Breitingen with 2.89 km² and Unterwachingen with 2.6 km².
The major district town of Ehingen (Danube) with 26,259 inhabitants, the city of Blaustein with 16,161 inhabitants and the city of Langenau with 15,247 inhabitants have the largest share of the population of the district of 196,047 inhabitants. The cities of Erbach , Blaubeuren and Laichingen also have over 10,000 inhabitants. Four communities have over 5,000 inhabitants, including the cities of Schelklingen , Dietenheim and Munderkingen . 15 municipalities have 2,000 to 5,000 inhabitants, twelve municipalities have between 1,000 and 2,000 inhabitants. The remaining 18 communities have less than 1,000 inhabitants. The three smallest communities in terms of population are Grundsheim with 221 inhabitants, Börslingen with 164 and Emeringen with 144 inhabitants.
The entire Alb-Danube district has a population density of 144 inhabitants per km². The largest population density within the district has the municipality Illerkirchberg with 421 inhabitants per km² and the cities Munderkingen with 405 and Dietenheim with 358. Five municipalities have a population density of over 200, including the city of Erbach . Another eleven municipalities have a population density greater than the district average of 144, including the cities of Langenau , Laichingen , Blaubeuren and the district town of Ehingen (Danube) . Nine municipalities have between 100 and 140 inhabitants per km² and 27 municipalities have a population density below 100, including the city of Schelklingen . The most sparsely populated communities are Holzkirch with 34, Börslingen with 26 and Emeringen with 19 inhabitants per km².
