Machtolsheim is a district of Laichingen and is located in the Alb-Donau district in Baden-Württemberg on the plateau of the Swabian Alb .
history
Machtolsheim was first mentioned in a document in 1204. However, experts suspect that the place was founded between the 5th and 6th centuries by the Alemanni . In the last days of the Second World War , Machtolsheim was attacked several times by American low-flying aircraft with on-board weapons and bombs. During this and during another attack by American tanks, several buildings and the tower of the church were set on fire. There were dead and injured. In the post-war period, Machtolsheim belonged to the American zone of occupation. In addition to a linen factory, a medium-sized company in the plastics industry settled on the outskirts. The first land use plan for the Ulm district was drawn up in 1962 in Machtolsheim. In the following years, all municipal facilities were renovated. Kindergarten, elementary school and multi-purpose hall were newly built. In 1964, the first biological collective sewage treatment plant in the Ulm district was put into operation in Machtolsheim . In 1973, Machtolsheim was the state winner in the competition "Our village should be more beautiful". In the course of the community reform around 1970 , the citizens decided against the formation of a new community with the neighboring town of Merklingen . On January 1, 1975, Machtolsheim was incorporated into the city of Laichingen and lost its independence. Since 1979, Machtolsheim has been entitled to use the name "Erholort".

In a blue, golden bordered shield on a green ground a striding golden Easter lamb with a victory flag. A silver flag with a red cross on a red stick with a cross on it.
Foundation of the coat of arms
The coat of arms of Machtolsheim goes back at least to the time before 1534, as the Easter lamb in this form was the coat of arms of the Blaubeuren monastery, to which Machtolsheim finally belonged since 1398. It is one of the oldest village coats of arms in the Alb-Danube district .
religion
Machtolsheim has been Protestant since the Reformation . The Laichingen districts of Machtolsheim and Suppingen have formed a parish within the Blaubeuren parish of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg since 2009 . In the past few decades, people of the Catholic faith and other faiths have increasingly settled in the village.

Buildings
Liebfrauenkirche Machtolsheim
The Evangelical Church of Our Lady is a baroque village church and dates back to the period from 1260 to 1280. The stucco ceiling of the church is particularly worth seeing . It was built in its current form in 1488 and changed to Baroque style in the 18th century: The Deggingen plasterer Johann Ulrich Schweizer created the baroque stucco ceiling in 1712, which was painted in 1745. A comprehensive renovation was carried out around 1934 by the Stuttgart architects Klatte & Weigle .
Machtolsheim water tower
The water tower was built to supply the towns of Machtolsheim, Merklingen and Nellingen with drinking water . The tower is 37.7 m high and has a viewing platform.
Green spaces and recreation
- In the district of Machtolsheim, south of the village, there is the "Camping and Leisure Center Heidehof" as well as a pony farm with a fairy tale park in the immediate vicinity .
- In the forest near the Schützenhaus there is a fitness trail that is maintained by the community and a refuge with a barbecue area.
- The local company Burkhardt Fruchtsaft has set up an orchard biotope in the immediate vicinity of the company premises. The fruit varieties native to the Swabian Alb are explained there. There is also a barbecue area and seating to linger.
Sports
The sports club Machtolsheim 1921 eV is the club with the largest number of members in town. It was founded in 1921 and comprises several departments. The sporting offer is expanded by the rifle club Machtolsheim 1923 eV, founded in 1923
Economy and Infrastructure
Business
There are several medium-sized manufacturing businesses in the village, as well as some craft businesses. Free fabric areas in the immediate vicinity of the motorway are available in the "Am Bahnhof" industrial park. The intermunicipal "industrial area Laichinger Alb" is also partly within the Machtolsheim district.
education
Machtolsheim has a three-group kindergarten with core-time care and care for children from the age of two and a primary school with grades one to four. There is also a multi-purpose hall and a sports hall.
traffic
- Machtolsheim is located on Landesstrasse 1230, two kilometers from the Merklingen junction . With the construction of two bypass roads , the regional traffic flows largely past the place.
- Up until 1985, Machtolsheim was connected to the railway network via the meter-gauge Amstetten – Laichingen railway.
