geography

Geographical location

The area around Seißen is characterized by a slight hilly landscape, as it is typical for the Alb plateau. About 49% of the district are forested. This means that Seißen has one of the largest forest areas in the Alb-Danube district .

Local division

The parts of Wennenden , Steigziegelhütte and Hessenhöfe as well as a few houses from the hamlet of Weiler , which are located on the Seessen mark, belong to Seißen. The formerly independent municipality of Seißen has been part of the city of Blaubeuren since 1975.

history

"Seißen is mentioned for the first time in connection with the founding of the Blaubeuren monastery in 1085. ... Whether the village with this form of name can be counted among the oldest settlement layer in southwest Germany has to be doubted. The form of the place name, the founding of the village in the older expansion period of the 7th / 8th century should be set, since there are no archaeological finds for the early period either, especially the row grave field that is actually expected in a primeval village for the 5th-7th centuries. "

The name Sussen, Suzzen, Seißen means pastureland.

Culture and sights

Buildings

Bakehouse

His bakery

The bakery was built in 1921. At that time, when fire regulations were tightened and there was a shortage of firewood, interest in a communal bakery increased. In this way, fuel could be saved due to the remaining heat from the previous baking and there was only one furnace to wait for. At the “Bachalaisa”, the number of dice is drawn to determine which baking community is allowed to bake and when.

Nicholas Church

The Nikolauskirche belongs to the Protestant community and, together with the school building and the adjacent rectory, forms the center of the village. It was once part of a fortified church and as such had a formerly strong curtain wall, of which only remains are preserved today. The church tower adjoining the choir to the north, with a base area of 5.8 × 6 m and a height of 38 m, is the characteristic landmark of the village, visible from afar.

Regular events

Children in Seißen carry sticks from the village on Spark Sunday (1908)

Backhausfest

A nationally known festival is the so-called Backhausfest. It takes place every year on the first weekend in July in the village center and is organized by the local associations. It is best known for the “Blatz” baked in the wood oven and the “farmer's bread”, which is prepared according to old traditions.

Christmas crib

Seßener traditional nativity scene

Since 1982 the traditional nativity scene can be seen in the Nikolauskirche every year at Christmas time. In the nativity scene, the place of birth is shifted from Jerusalem to the Alb of the 19th century. 16 hand-made figures in traditional Seßen costume, hand-made by art teacher Ruth Häcker from Radelstetten , 29 sheep and two dogs can be seen around the baptismal font of the church. The figures all have a name, which on the one hand was of biblical origin and on the other hand was common in Seißen. The costumes of the figures are supposed to keep alive the knowledge of previous clothing on the Blaubeurer Alb . Men and women, poor and rich, single and married couples, boys and girls had different costumes depending on their class and are represented accordingly in the manger. Maria wears the costume of a married woman, Joseph stands in a carpenter's clothes. Maria and Josef are also visited by a couple who, in addition to bread and rolls, also have the typical Seißen specialty "Blatz" with them on a wheelbarrow. The man is wearing a blue shirt , a garment that used to be typical of the male population of the Swabian Alb. The women from Seißen also made a blue shirt for the shepherd boy.

societies

The village community is quite active in Seißen, which is probably one of the reasons for the relatively large number of clubs, volunteers and members. In addition to the membership fees, a considerable part is financed by the members through their help at the Backhausfest, sports home service, scrap iron collection, etc.

music

In addition to the local choral society, the music society Seißen with its active and youth band is mainly responsible for public musical life. The latter organizes an annual concert and a serenade concert every year.

gymnastic and sport club

The TSV Seißen is divided into the following departments: badminton, hang gliding, football, athletics, chess, tennis, table tennis, gymnastics, volleyball. The focus is on having fun with the activity and movement, although in some departments, such as B. Hang gliding, is flown at a very high level.

Albverein

Under the umbrella organization of the Swabian Alb Association , the local group Seißen belongs to the Danube-Blau-Gau. In addition to regular hikes, which mostly take place on Sundays, high mountain tours are also undertaken. In addition to the sporting activities, emphasis is placed on maintaining the typical landscape structures of the Swabian Alb. The Albverein also runs an active folk dance group.
