Steinberg is a district of the Staig municipality in the Alb-Donau district in Baden-Württemberg .

The village with around 800 inhabitants is mostly located on a plateau on the eastern slope of the Weihungtal . The Essendorf residential area is in the Steinberg district .

history

400 meters northwest of Steinberg are Roman rubble. On the southwestern edge of the village there are remains of a medieval castle stable .

Steinberg is first handed down in 1437. The place belonged to the county of Kirchberg and came as a fief to the Ulm family Roth, who before 1440 sold the place with lower court and church patronage half to the Gmünder and Ulm family von Stainhus and half to the Ulm family Haid. In 1440 half of Steinhus went to the Counts of Kirchberg, in 1466 to the Haid and subsequently the whole place to the Ulm Rembold, who sold it in 1503 to Gutenzell Monastery . This sold him in 1522 to the Wiblingen Monastery .

From then on the monastery exercised sovereignty and the lower court contested by the Fuggers . The Fuggers exercised blood jurisdiction.

In 1806 the place came to Württemberg and was subordinate to the Oberamt Wiblingen .

On April 1, 1972, the formerly independent municipality of Steinberg was incorporated into Weinstetten , which was renamed Staig on October 9, 1972.
