Kirchen is a suburb of the large district town of Ehingen (Danube) in the Alb-Danube district in Baden-Württemberg . The place was incorporated into Ehingen in 1972. The mayor is currently Alfred Schrode (2014). Districts of Kirchen are Mühlen, Schlechtenfeld, Stetten, Deppenhausen and Mochental .

history

In 1091 the place Kirchen is mentioned for the first time as Chilicheim . At that time, the noble free Werner Chilicheim called himself after the place. Werner belonged to the rule of the Counts of Wartstein . Since the 14th century, several families took turns owning churches. In 1621 the Lords of Remchingen zu Hohenentringen near Tübingen sold the place to the Zwiefalten monastery . In 1803 the place became part of Württemberg. In 1810 the local mayor was also responsible for Deppenhausen, Mochental, Mühlen and Schlechtenfeld. The residential area in Stetten was added in 1939.

The early church of St. Martin was probably built as early as the 7th century . It was completely dismantled in 1522 and rebuilt by the Marchtal Monastery. However, the church and parish were first mentioned in writing in 1275. The patron saint was Austria in the middle of the 14th century. In 1387 the right of patronage came to the Marchtal monastery , into which the church was also incorporated. The current parish church of St. Martin was built in the 18th century. The tower has been taken over from the previous late Gothic building. The future bishop Joannes Baptista Sproll was pastor here from 1909 to 1912.

After a referendum, Kirchen was incorporated into Ehingen on May 1, 1972 and is one of 17 districts there with its six districts.

Attractions

Around 500 meters south of Kirchen, on a hill, is St. Joseph's Chapel, which the church priest Johannes Dreher had built in 1702. The future bishop Joannes Baptista Sproll was pastor here from 1909 to 1912. In his honor, the parsonage next door, built in 1754 by the Zwiefalten monastery , which used to house the town hall and a school, is called "Bishop Sproll parish hall".

The town hall of Kirchen has been the old syringe and dairy building next to the Gasthaus Hirsch since 1911.

At several wells in the village, a stream emerges that used to drive the so-called Obere Mühle (built in 1689 according to the lintel) of the Zwiefalten monastery . A wide, renatured strip is laid out on its bank below the village and leads to the “Kirchener See”, a small, idyllic pond. The water ultimately flows into the Schmiech .

Churches have two interesting elevations: on the one hand the Galgenberg, on which the rulers once operated a place of execution and where there is now a peace linden tree and a bench for hikers. And on the other hand the “Bürgele”, a small elevation on which a valley castle used to stand and which Werner von Chilicheim (churches) probably already lived in.

In addition to the stately Baroque Mochental Castle with the world's first broom museum, in which the Schrade Gallery shows changing exhibitions, the Joseph Chapel, built in 1702 and located about 500 meters south of Kirchen, is also worth seeing. A way of the cross leads in a circle on its hill.

The "Mühlen Cathedral" is a chapel consecrated to Mary, which stands far above the suburb of Mühlen. In Deppenhausen, a chapel from 1750 can be visited, which Munderkingen must have built.

One of the most beautiful village chapels in the area was built in Stetten under the patronage of the Salem Monastery . There is also the rock stables to discover, a stone age cave ruin, and the Fuchstörle (both near Mühlen), the Schusterhöhle between Schlechtenfeld and Kirchen and the so-called Gypsy Cave on the Yellow Rock near the road from Kirchen to Mochental.

Kirchen has 682 hectares of state forest and 194 hectares of community and foundation forest as well as several fish ponds.

societies

Village life in churches is shaped by many associations. The Sportfreunde Kirchen has a football, tennis and gymnastics department. There is also a ski club with a Taekwondo department. In the church band , young and old can make music together. It is sung in the song wreath and in the church choir. The church fools guild organizes the Carnival Monday parade every year .
