The Wartstein ruin is the ruin of a rock castle at 660  m above sea level. NN on a rocky slope, 150 meters above the valley of the Große Lauter southwest of the Erbstetten district of the city of Ehingen in the Alb-Danube district in Baden-Württemberg .

In the 12th century the castle was built by the Lords of Wartenstein in the area of ​​the Swerzenhuntare , in 1185 a "comes de Wartstein" was mentioned in a document. On March 5, 1392, Heinrich von Wartstein sold the castle and all its possessions to the Dukes Stephan , Friedrich and Johann of Bavaria , and in 1394 the castle was expanded. In July 1495 the castles Wartstein and Monsberg are destroyed. On February 18, 1508, the ruins became the property of Hans Speth von Granheim and in 1848 the property of the municipality of Erbstetten. Repair work took place in 1924, and further repair work and the addition of a spiral staircase were carried out between 1968 and 1970 .

The castle complex, with a neck moat , which had no core castle , is a shield wall castle in a spur position with a significant remnant of a 12 meter high tower-like shield wall as a donjon , in the protection of which is the double- gabled hall with a base area of ​​7.0 by 10 , 7 meters, on the front side of which remains of the surrounding walls can still be seen.

Today the tower serves as a lookout tower on main hiking trail 2 and main hiking trail 5 of the Swabian Alb Association .
