The Aorsen were the largest tribe in the confederation of the Iranian equestrian people of the Sarmatians . After splitting off from the other tribes, they settled north of the Bosporan Empire and gradually conquered almost all of Ukraine , Belarus and the territory of Russia as far as Novgorod . They drove out the other Sarmatian tribes resident there and also defeated the Bosporan Empire in a 7-year war. Gradually, however, the strength of the aorsi, which in the 3rd century AD were only a shadow of themselves, dwindled. The Goths took advantage of this situation and attacked the Aorsen. However, it took them nearly 20 years to finally defeat the Aorsen.
