Aoshima ( Japanese 青島 ) or Iyo-Aoshima ( 伊 予 青島 ) is an island in the marine region Iyo-nada of the Seto Inland Sea in Ehime Prefecture .

The island is located 13 km north of the coast of the main island Shikoku . It belonged to the Nagahama community until January 11, 2005 , but was incorporated into Ōzu and forms the district of Nagahama chō -Aoshima there.

At its wedding as a fishing village in the 40s / 50s, Aoshima had around 900 inhabitants, but today (2015) this has shrunk to 22 mainly elderly residents. In contrast, there are around 120 cats that were originally acquired because of a mouse plague, but which were then able to reproduce due to a lack of natural enemies. The island is therefore also known as the "island of cats" ( 猫 (の) 島 , neko (no) shima ) and is a popular tourist destination.
