List of Japanese islands
This is a list of Japanese Islands , with a selection being made. Japan consists of 6,852 islands in total, including islands to which Japan claims. Only 425 of these islands are inhabited, with 98% of the population living on the four main islands. Land areas completely surrounded by water and with a circumference of at least 100 m during flooding are considered islands .
Main islands
Depending on the definition, Japan has four or five main islands: The four large islands Hokkaido , Honshu , Kyushu and Shikoku as well as the much smaller Okinawa , which is not always counted as the main island.

In late November 2013, the Japanese Coast Guard reported that an underwater volcano erupting near the Ogasawara Islands was creating a new island.
