Tobishima ( Japanese 飛 島 ) is an island in the Sea of Japan just 30 km from the main Japanese island of Honshū .

geography

Tobishima is about 3 km long, 1 km wide, and has an area of 2.73 km² with a coastline of 10.2 km. The highest point is the Takamori-yama ( 高 森 山 ) with 68 m.

The island is mostly flat with a gentle rise from the east coast to the west coast, with the west coast being characterized by steep cliffs. The port facilities are therefore on the east coast and the population is concentrated along this. This is around 250 people, 90% of whom are over 50 years old. Administratively, the island belongs to the municipality of Sakata in Yamagata prefecture and forms a separate district.

Due to the warm Tsushima current , the weather is mild all year round with average annual temperatures of 12 ° C, with even snowfall of 10 cm being rare. Evergreen deciduous trees such as Machilus thunbergii and Eurya japonica can therefore be found in the vegetation . In addition, the island is an important resting place for around 270 species of migratory birds in spring and autumn. The Ebisu-Vorkap ( 蛭 子 前 岬 , Ebisu-maesaki ) in the southeast is a protected breeding area for thousands of Japanese gulls , as are the rock islands to the west.

history

Archaeological finds from the early Jōmon period from 6000–7000 years ago have been found on the island . A peculiarity of this is that finds with characteristics of the northern and southern types appear, which indicates that the island was a cultural exchange point. In the late Heian period , the island was under the control of the Abe clan from Mutsu province and the Kiyohara clan from Dewa province . The Nikaho , Mutō , Mogami and Sakai followed later .

The island had different names over time ( 都 島 , 渡 島 , 別 れ 島 , 鶴 路 島 , 潮 島 , 豊 島 , と ど 島 ) until it got its current name at the beginning of the Edo period .

In April 1950 the village of Tobishima and with it the island was incorporated into Sakata. In 1963 the island became part of the Chōkai Quasi National Park .
