Ie-jima or Ie-shima ( Japanese 伊 江 島 ) is a Japanese island northwest off the coast of the Motobu Peninsula in northern Okinawa . It belongs to the Ryūkyū Islands .
The village of the same name Ie (4109 inhabitants) with the Iejima airport is located on the 22.76 km² island . The nearby atoll Nakanosu also belongs to its administrative area . The highest point is the Gusuku-yama ( 城 山 ) with 172.2 m.
There were several Japanese air bases on it, which were expanded and used after the capture by the US Air Force in 1945 to take action against the other Japanese islands in the north. At that time the island was called "Ie Shima" in the western media.
