Taketomi-jima ( Japanese. 竹 富 島 , literally: bamboo-rich island ) is a 5.43 km² small, flat island of the Yaeyama group in the municipality of the same name Taketomi , 4 km southwest of Ishigaki-jima in Japan .
Taketomi-jima impresses with its large, shallow and particularly clean sandy beaches. A special feature is the so-called "star sand " ( 星砂 , hoshizuna ) with grains of sand in the shape of a star, which was created by remnants of small sea animals . The very well-preserved village on the island in the traditional style of the Ryūkyū Islands with its typical stone walls attracts many tourists, mainly on day trips. Sugar cane cultivation is another economic mainstay.
There are coral reefs around Taketomi-jima. However, divers must be aware of the strong ocean currents between the inner islands of the Yaeyama Group.
The island can be reached via a ferry to Ishigaki-jima.
