The Sakishima Islands (also Saki Islands ; Japanese 先島諸島 Sakishima-shotō ) lie between the island of Okinawa and Taiwan and belong to the Ryūkyū Islands . The affiliation of the Senkaku Islands is disputed between the PRC , Republic of China (Taiwan) and Japan .

Japan sees the islands as part of Okinawa Prefecture , the southwest of which are the Sakishima Islands.

The Sakishima Islands are divided into:

the Miyako Islands in the east,
the Yaeyama Islands to the west and
the Senkaku Islands in the north.

The Miyako and Yaeyama Islands both belong geologically to the Ryūkyū Arch , while the Senkaku Islands are north of the Okinawa Trench on the Asian continental shelf . Therefore, the Senkaku Islands are partly not included in the Sakishima Islands.

Overall, the group consists of 44 islands (nine of which belong to the Senkaku Islands) of at least one hectare and extend over a total area of 848 km² (including the 6 km² for the Senkaku Islands). Of these, 20 islands are inhabited.

As of October 1, 2019, there were 107,610 inhabitants in the five municipalities of the archipelago.
