Taketomi ( Japanese 竹 富 町 , - chō ) is a community in the southwest of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan .

geography

It includes the islands of the Yaeyama group , except Ishigaki-jima , Yonaguni-jima , of which ten are inhabited. To compare the size of the population, the number of inhabitants per island is listed as of 1995:

• Iriomote-jima ( 西 表 島 ; 1887 inhabitants),
• Hateruma-jima ( 波 照 間 島 ; 595 inhabitants),
• Kohama-jima ( 小 浜 島 ; 486 inhabitants),
• Taketomi-jima ( 竹 富 島 ; 262 inhabitants),
• Kuroshima ( 黒 島 ; 193 inhabitants),
• Hatoma-jima ( 鳩 間 島 ; 45 inhabitants),
• Double island Aragusuku-jima ( 新城 島 ; 9 inhabitants),
• Yubu-shima ( 由 布 島 ; 9 residents) and
• Sotobanari-jima ( 外 離島 ; 1 inhabitant).

The municipality's town hall is located in the neighboring municipality of Ishigaki on the island of the same name.

The islands of Aragusuku, Hateruma, Hatoma, Kohama, Kuroshima and Taketomi form their own districts ( aza ). Clockwise on Iriomote are the following:

• Uehara ( 上原 ) in the north,
• Takana ( 高 那 ) in the northeast,
• Komi ( 古 見 ) in the east, as well as via Yubu,
• Haeminaka ( 南風 見 仲 ) in the southeast at the mouth of the Nakama-gawa ( 仲 間 川 ) and along its bay,
• Haemi ( 南風 見 ) in the south,
• Iriomote ( 西 表 ) in the west, as well as via Sotobanari and Uchibanari, and
• Sakiyama ( 崎 山 ) in the far west.
