Sotobanari ( Japanese 外 離島 Sotobanari-jima , German 'outer, distant island' ) is one of the islands of the Yaeyama Islands , which belong to the Sakishima archipelago . The tropical island is located in the Japanese prefecture of Okinawa in the extreme southwest of Japan in the East China Sea .

Administratively, the island belongs to the district of Iriomote of the municipality of Taketomi .

geography

Sotobanari is a secondary island 1700 meters west of the island of Iriomote and just under 500 northwest of the other secondary island Uchibanari ("inner, distant island"). The island is 1700 meters long and up to 930 meters wide and has an area of ​​1.32 km².

Residents

Only one pensioner lives on the island, the Japanese Masafumi Nagasaki. However, the island is officially uninhabited.
