Attractions
- Not far from the city center is the Buddhist temple of the Myōshin-ji line of the Rinzai school Tōrin-ji ( 桃林 寺 ). Founded in 1641 as a temple of the Shingon School , it is the oldest Buddhist temple on the Yaeyama Islands. Its temple gate is also the oldest in the prefecture. Next door is the Shinto shrine Gongen-do ( 権 現 堂 ) in which Kumano Gongen is entrenched. Destroyed in 1771 and then rebuilt in 1787, it is the oldest wooden building in the prefecture. The ensemble was therefore classified as an important cultural asset .
- The nearby Miyara Donchi house , built in 1819, is also worth a visit. Its architectural style is similar to that of a samurai house, but samurai have never lived on the Yaeyama Islands. The modern Catholic church of the city forms an attractive contrast.
- At the Shiritsu Yaeyama Hakubutsukan Museum of the Yaeyama Islands on the city's main street, various types of boats can be seen, among other things. The museum is a special attraction for Japanese tourists as it is the southernmost museum in all of Japan.
- The Fusaki Kannon-dō ( 冨 崎 観 音 堂 ) was founded in 1701 and got its current name in 1742. The temple is dedicated to the Buddhist goddess Kannon . Destroyed again and again by typhoons, its current form dates from 1928. It is located about 5 km west of the city on a hill and offers a beautiful view over the island of Ishigaki to the neighboring island of Iriomote. It can be reached from the Ringstrasse via a longer staircase.
- The Tojinbaka tomb , about 6 km west of the city on the ring road, commemorates 400 Chinese who were killed in a rebellion in 1852 on a ship sailing to America near Ishigaki.
- To the northwest of the city, Kabira-wan Bay is a popular destination.
